Why FPS is Not Stable? (4 Reasons You Must Know)

FPS is one of the significant factors when it comes to gaming, and if your FPS is unstable, you will face an awful gaming experience. There are several reasons behind the unstableness of FPS, and here I have explained some of those significant reasons.

The term FPS stands for Frame Rates per Second, and it is the frequency at which consecutive images are captured or displayed.

The higher FPS provides you the better & smoother performance; in contrast, the lower FPS does not provide you with smoother gaming performance; therefore, the games become less enjoyable to play.

Lets explore the major reasons behind the unstableness of FPS-

Why is your FPS Unstable? (4 Reasons Explained)

Now, without wasting too much time, let’s check out the reasons why your FPS does not remain stable –

VSync

VSync or Vertical sync is a graphics technology that synchronizes the frame rate with a gaming monitor’s refresh rate.

The vertical sync is an essential factor for FPS; if your FPS is unstable or capped, it might be related to your VSync settings. Enabling the Vsync synchronizes the frame rate of the game with the refresh rate on your monitor, which helps with screen tearing.

However, if your FPS cannot match your monitor’s refresh rate, enabling double-buffered VSync will cut your FPS in half. You can get the VSync settings in games by navigating to the options.

But before enabling the Vsync, remember that it does not increase the FPS; instead, if your FPS is higher than the refresh rate of your monitor, then VSync will put a cap on it.

Ambient Occlusion Low

In 3D computer graphics, modeling, and animation ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting.

There are different variants of the Ambient Occlusion like SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion), HBAO (Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion), HDAO (High Definition Ambient Occlusion).

Usually, these different variants of Ambient Occlusion do not improve the FPS too much, but when the Ambient Occlusion becomes low, it suddenly unstable your FPS.

However, using the different types of Ambient Occlusion and controlling the low AO can provide you the stable FPS between 45 FPS to 60 FPS, which is suitable for most games.

Anisotropic Filter Off

Anisotropic Filter is another major factor behind the Unstable FPS (Framerates Per Second) & in 3d computer graphics, anisotropic filtering is the method of enhancing the image quality of textures on surfaces of computer graphics that are at oblique viewing angles with respect to the camera where the projection of the texture appears to be non-orthogonal.

In simple terms, an anisotropic Filter significantly improves texture quality. Besides that, anisotropic filtering can noticeably affect the framerate.

So, if your FPS is unstable, in that case, you need to enable Anisotropic Filtering at least once & it can stable your FPS.

Any Special Rendering Off

Rendering is the process involved in generating a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image from a model by means of application programs.

Rendering techniques can significantly impact the final visual quality of your game. In simple terms, some special renderings can affect your FPS. To fix this issue, you need to check all the special renderings.
