Welcome to this article here in this article we will discuss what are the major differences between LAN vs WAN, besides that we will also discuss what is networks and types of networks.
The network is basically a mixture of components .the the first component of a network is a sender,(who se4nds something),2nd component is the receiver (who receives something ),3rd component is the message,4th is a protocol(means a set of rules),5th component is medium.
When two or more computers or servers connect with others through a medium using the same protocols and exchange messages with others, that is known as a network.
That also means that a computer network forms when two or more computers connected to one another in order to share resources such s (printers, modem) to exchange files and information
Table of Contents
LAN :
LAN is the computers that are present in the same locality that interconnects to consist a network. LANs give permissions to users to share lots of resources.
They are situated to a specific place ,that is in between one kilo-meter.
For example, you can see how the LAN system works in an organization with different departments, namely, financial, engineering, sales each connected with storage devices and peripherals, such as printers, modems.
Advantages of LAN
- LANs allow people sharing of expensive resources, such as colored laser printers and high-speed mass storage devices, among a number of users
2. LANs allow for high-speed exchange of essential information between key people in an organization.
3. LANs contribute inceased productivity. In case of a business, a LAN contributes to ncrease productivity.
Disadvantages of LAN
1. The financial cost of local area networking is still very high.
2. Local area networking software memory space in each of the computers used on the network.
3. Local area network adds another level of complexity to the computer applications.
WAN
Wan is a digital communication system which interconnects different sites, computer installations and user terminals.
It may also enable LANs to communicate with each other. This type of network may be developed to operate nationwide or worldwide. Wan stands for “wide area network”.It is similar to the local area network, but it’s a lot bigger.
Many wide area networks span long distances via telephone lines. They can also be composed of smaller LANs that are interconnected. The internet describes as the biggest wan in the world. Wan implementation can be done with the help of public transmission or a private network.
A wan connects more than one lan and use for larger geographical areas.
WANs are similar to a banking system, where hundreds of branches in different cities are connected to each other in order to share their official data.
Difference between LAN vs WAN
LAN | WAN |
It stands for local area network | It stands for wide area network |
Lan is smaller than wan | Wan is bigger than LAN |
LANs are limited to a particular location | WANs are not limited to a particular location |
The speed of LAN is very high than wan | Wan is slower than LAN |
Lan has a higher data transfer rate | Wan has a lower data transfer rate |
Lan is very easy to maintain | Wan is difficult to maintain |
The organization network is a good example of LAN | Internet is an excellent example of a wan |
The coverage area of a LAN is very small | The coverage area of wan is very large |
The initial cost of LAN is low | The initial cost is very high |
